" L'homme propose, Dieu dispose. Et c'est tant mieux ! Le cœur du jeune frère Étienne Vayssière fourmillait d'excellents projets. Dans la ligne de sa vocation dominicaine, il se voyait déjà en théologien, scrutant les richesses du Mystère de Dieu pour en nourrir la vie des croyants. Ou encore en prédicateur ardent convertissant les foules. Et soudain –; il a vingt-quatre ans –; tout s'effondre. Maux de tête, fatigue permanente, impuissance. Le verdict tombe : incurable. Il est alors relégué dans des couvents où il végète, s'ennuie, tourne en rond. Il échoue enfin à la grotte de la Sainte-Baume. Enterré vivant. Il ne peut ni prêcher, ni lire, ni même prier... Il n'a plus rien. Ou plutôt, dépouillé qu'il est de l'accessoire, il n'a plus que l'essentiel : l'adhésion de chaque instant à la volonté de Dieu " (frère Serge-Thomas Bonino, o.p.). Le frère Marie-Joseph Nicolas a su, en 1941, quelques mois après la mort du saint provincial de Toulouse, esquisser à partir des échanges qu'il eut avec lui ce magnifique portrait dont le plan constitue à lui seul tout un programme spirituel : la grâce de la souffrance ; la grâce de la solitude ; la grâce de l'intimité mariale ; la grâce de la paternité ; la grâce de la mort. Nous joignons à ces notes un texte écrit par le père Vayssière en 1935 sur la dévotion à saint Dominique. La manière dont il a été amené par des circonstances providentielles à vivre le charisme dominicain confère à son portrait de saint Dominique une touche originale. -- "Man proposes, God disposes. And it's a good thing too! As a young brother, Étienne Vayssière had a heart full of projects. In the context of his Dominican vocation, he saw himself as a theologian, seeking the riches of God's mysteries for the greater nourishment of believers' lives. Or an ardent preacher converting the crowds. Then suddenly–; at the age of twenty-four–; his dreams collapsed. Headaches, constant tiredness, weakness. Then came the verdict: he was suffering from an incurable disease. He was sent to convents where he lived like a vegetable, bored, unable to do anything at all. He ended up at the grotto of La Sainte-Baume. Buried alive. He could neither preach nor read, he couldn't even pray... he had nothing left. Or we might say that stripped of all accessory things, he retained the essential: his constant adhesion to the will of God' (Brother Serge-Thomas Bonino, O.P.). In 1941, a few months after the death of the provincial saint of Toulouse, Brother Marie-Joseph Nicolas sketched this magnificent portrait based on their conversations. Its structure is in itself a spiritual programme: the grace of suffering; the grace of solitude; the grace of Marial intimacy; the grace of paternity; the grace of death. We have added a text on the devotion to Saint Dominic written by Father Vayssière in 1935. The way in which providence guided him to live the Dominican charisma makes this portrait of Saint Dominic an original feature.
